How to Add a Climb
February 1st, 2006 by Matt
OK, so you have signed up, received your confirmation email, and finally logged into your Bouldr account - you can now begin contributing your own climbs!
But how?
There are several ways of getting to the ‘add a new climb’ screen. The simplest is to just click on the ‘Add a New Climb’ button on the toolbar to take you directly to the Climb Editor.
The Climb Editor
OK, so now you should be able to see the climb editor. From this screen you can name, describe, grade and tag your problem, but more importantly, you can add an image of the climb and draw your route directly onto it.
Naming, Describing and Grading the Climb
If you know the climb you are adding already has a well-known name, then try to use that name instead of coming up with a new one - many people already know of the Buckstone Dyno, so renaming it to something of your own choice will only confuse the matter. If, however, you have no idea of a particular climb’s name, then do try to come up with a name - it’s pretty boring having thousands of routes named ‘Unknown Climb’.
Add the name of the crag and area where the climb may be found too - knowing the popular name of a crag is very helpful, especially when needing to ask directions!
Grading is another matter entirely - give your best estimate of your climb. If you have no idea at all, then leave it ungraded. You can always come back and change it later.
When you come to describe your climb, you don’t need to describe every move. Try to cover the relevant and interesting details such as the landing if it is poor, or the difficulty of topping out. If you have an image of the climb, then you can show the route by overlaying a line rather than going into paragraphs of directions.
Adding an Image
Before you try to upload a 3Mb image of your climb, please note that due to storage and processing constraints, Bouldr will only accept images of 2Mb or less!
If your image is larger than this, then you should be able to crop or re-size your image using a suitable image manipulation package like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop (to name but a few).
Once you have your image ready for upload, click on the ‘Browse’ button, locate the image on your computer, then press the ‘Upload’ button. If all goes well, your image will be displayed on the right of the screen.
Adding a Line to your Image
Adding a line can be done in three steps:
- Click on the ‘Add Line’ button under your image
- Click on the image to add a point, then click to add another point (repeat as necessary)
- Click on the ‘Save Line’ Button under your image
That’s it! Once you save your climb to Bouldr, the line will be drawn over the image, but don’t worry, you can change the line at any time by editing the climb.
Adding any Interesting Notes to your Image
Sometimes (and especially when describing an eliminate), it is necessary to point out particular features on the rock face. The image notes have been developed specifically for this purpose.
To add an image note to a picture, click on the ‘Add Note’ button under the image. This will create a new default note on your picture. Use the orange boxes to size the image as you need, and type your note into the white box. Once you have finished editing the note, click the save button, and your image note will be saved to your image.
To edit an existing image note, click on the note, and the editing controls will be redisplayed for you.
